If you've ever driven both a diesel and an electric forklift, you'll notice a very obvious difference-noise. When a diesel forklift starts, the engine roars loudly. At higher RPMs, the exhaust gas and cooling fan operate at high speed, and the overall mechanical vibration adds to the noise, making it exceptionally loud. Electric forklifts, on the other hand, have very little noise when starting up, some even almost none. During driving, turning, and handling, the entire vehicle operates more smoothly and quietly.
Many people believe this is because electric forklifts don't have an engine. But in fact, this is only one reason.


Different Power Principles Create A Significant Noise Difference At Its Source
Diesel forklifts are powered by the combustion of diesel fuel in the cylinders. During combustion, the piston reciprocates continuously, driving the crankshaft at high speed. This is accompanied by a series of mechanical actions such as intake, exhaust, and fuel injection, all of which generate continuous noise and vibration.
Electric forklifts, however, are powered directly by a drive motor. The motor generates rotational torque through electromagnetic action; there is no combustion process, and no complex valve train. The noise and vibration generated during operation are much lower. This is why many people find electric forklifts almost "silent" when starting up for the first time.
Are Electric Forklifts Truly Silent?
However, electric forklifts are not completely silent. They still generate some noise during operation, but the sources have changed.
For example: hydraulic noise from the hydraulic pump; the sound of hydraulic oil flowing when lifting and lowering the forks; the sound of tires rubbing against the ground; the mechanical noise from the mast, chain, and other components; and the wind noise from the cooling fan.
However, without the high-frequency roar of an internal combustion engine, these minor noises become negligible.
Why Are More And More Indoor Spaces Choosing Electric Forklifts?
Warehouses, logistics parks, food processing plants, pharmaceutical workshops, and supermarket distribution centers are mostly enclosed work spaces. Long-term use of diesel forklifts would result in continuous high-decibel noise that would constantly disturb workers, and the exhaust fumes from the engine would pollute the indoor air. This would affect employee health and would not comply with clean production standards in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
Electric forklifts, on the other hand, combine the advantages of low noise and zero emissions, perfectly suited for the demands of enclosed indoor operations. They also align with the trend towards green warehousing and have become the mainstream choice for indoor material handling.
With continuous advancements in battery technology, motor control technology, and overall vehicle noise reduction design, modern electric forklifts have not only reduced operating noise but also further improved operator comfort and the quality of the working environment.
