Winter Maintenance For Loaders

Dec 03, 2025

This winter arrived exceptionally early, with many northern regions experiencing their first snowfall in mid-October. For construction machinery operators, in addition to taking precautions against the cold themselves, it's crucial to ensure their "good partners"-loaders-remain in good working order during the cold season.

Winter loader breakdowns are often related to improper fuel usage. Replace the fuel with the appropriate type according to the warning label, and thoroughly drain the old fuel from the tank to prevent mixing and subsequent separation or wax buildup.

Before starting work each day, preheat the engine by letting it idle for a few minutes. In colder regions, use winter-specific engine oil and remember to add antifreeze to prevent the radiator from freezing or cracking.

Besides these points, there are several other key aspects to winter loader maintenance:

The hydraulic system, a vital part of the loader's power transmission, is also easily affected by low temperatures. In winter, hydraulic oil viscosity increases significantly, leading to slower equipment movement, increased resistance, and even jamming. At this time, please change the hydraulic oil according to the equipment manual, and regularly check the sealing of each hydraulic component. Promptly identify and address any oil leaks or impurities to ensure the system remains responsive and operates smoothly in cold conditions.

In winter, roads in cold regions often accumulate snow and ice, reducing tire grip and affecting the flexibility of the drive system. Therefore, tire and drive system maintenance is particularly important. Regularly check tire pressure according to the equipment manual's standards; adjust promptly if pressure is outside the recommended range. Clean debris such as gravel, mud, and snow from tire treads before and after operation to prevent impaired traction. Replace tires if treads are severely worn. Lubricate drive axles and other components to ensure proper rotation in low temperatures, reduce wear, and prevent operational instability or malfunctions due to stiff components.

After operation, promptly clean snow, mud, and other debris from the loader body and bucket to prevent debris from sticking due to low nighttime temperatures. Inspect the bucket teeth for wear.

When parking, choose a dry, sheltered environment to prevent the equipment from being covered by snow. If outdoor parking is unavoidable, place wooden blocks under the bucket to prevent it from freezing to the ground.
