When a forklift is handling goods, the mast is not always vertical. In actual operation, the mast can tilt forward or backward.
These few degrees of angle change may seem insignificant, but they directly affect the forks' ability to pick up goods, the stability of the goods, and the overall stress on the forklift. The forward and backward tilting of the mast is mainly used to address issues related to loading and unloading goods, stable load-bearing, and driving safety.

Forward mast tilt: Facilitates fork insertion and removal of goods.
When the mast is tilted forward, the forks will tilt forward at a certain angle.
During loading and unloading, a proper forward tilt helps the forks insert into the pallet or the bottom of the goods more easily. Especially when goods are tightly packed and the forks need to accurately enter the pallet holes, the mast angle directly affects operational convenience.
After the forks are inserted into the goods, the mast angle also needs to be adjusted according to the actual situation to avoid unnecessary interference between the forks and the pallet or goods.
However, a larger forward tilt is not always better. When goods are already loaded onto the forks, excessive forward tilting of the mast will shift the center of gravity of the goods, increasing the risk of forward tipping.
Mast Tilting Back: Bringing Goods Closer to the Truck Body
After picking up a load, the forklift typically tilts the mast back slightly.
With the mast tilted back, the goods move closer to the driver's side, changing the relationship between the goods' center of gravity and the forklift's front axle, which improves stability during handling.
Especially when the forklift needs to travel with a load, proper tilting back reduces the possibility of goods slipping forward.
For example, when handling cartons, pallets, or other stacked goods, the goods are not a completely fixed unit. Road bumps, braking, and steering can all cause the goods to shift. Tilting the mast back allows the goods to remain more stably on the forks.
Why Can't It Be Tilted Backwards All the Time?
Since tilting back is beneficial for traveling with a load, can it be maintained from picking up to unloading? No.
The forklift needs to adjust the mast angle according to different stages of the operation. When picking up goods, the forward tilt angle needs to be adjusted according to the position of the goods and pallet to allow the forks to enter smoothly. During lifting and handling, a slight backward tilt is usually required to keep the goods stable. When stacking, the mast angle needs to be adjusted according to the rack height and goods position to ensure the forks can accurately enter the storage location.
In other words, the mast tilt angle is not a fixed state but is adjusted according to different forklift operations.
What else does the mast tilt angle affect?
Besides goods stability, the mast tilt angle also affects the forklift's operating posture.
When the mast tilts forward or backward, the center of gravity of the goods, the position of the forks, and the overall stress on the forklift will change. Therefore, the rated load of a forklift cannot be simply understood as "it can bear this weight at any angle and any height."
In actual use, factors such as load center distance, lifting height, goods size, goods center of gravity, and attachment weight also need to be considered.
This is why forklift parameter tables, in addition to the rated load, also indicate parameters such as load center distance, maximum lifting height, and mast tilt angle.
What does 6° forward tilt and 12° backward tilt mean?
Taking some forklift mast parameters as an example, if it is labeled: Mast Tilt Angle: 6° Forward Tilt / 12° Reverse Tilt, this means the mast can tilt forward by a maximum of 6° and backward by a maximum of 12° from its vertical position.
The angles in these two directions are not necessarily the same because they correspond to different operational requirements. Different tilt angles, combined with different working conditions, are necessary for more accurate goods handling operations.
Therefore, setting forward and reverse tilt masts on forklifts is not simply to add a "professional-looking" parameter, but rather to ensure the forks maintain a more suitable working posture during picking, lifting, handling, and stacking.
When purchasing forklifts, consumers may tend to focus only on rated load and maximum lifting height, easily overlooking the mast tilt angle parameter. Actual selection must comprehensively consider the pallet specifications, goods shape, rack conditions, and operating aisle to match the mast configuration suitable for your specific working conditions, ensuring the equipment is easy to use and that operations are more stable and safer.
