Forklift Fork Selection And Maintenance Guide

Jan 29, 2026

In logistics and material handling, forklifts are undoubtedly the "main force," and the forks are the most critical load-bearing components. Choosing the right forks and maintaining them properly is fundamental to ensuring operational safety and efficiency.

1. Fork Material and Manufacturing Process

High-quality forks begin with good materials and precise manufacturing processes. Most forklifts are made of high-strength alloy steel, which has excellent torsional and deformation resistance. This effectively reduces wear and impact during operation, significantly extending service life.

2. Fork Selection for Different Industry Environments

For ordinary warehousing operations, standard forks are sufficient for daily pallet handling.

For handling timber or other irregularly shaped goods, polished, full-tapered forks can be used. They allow for smooth insertion under the goods, reducing damage.

For industries with high hygiene standards, such as pharmaceuticals, stainless steel forks are necessary. Their good corrosion resistance meets stringent hygiene requirements, preventing contamination of goods.

When handling easily slippery goods, choose forks with an anti-slip coating to prevent accidental slippage and damage.

3. Fork Safety Inspection

Wear at the fork root is easily overlooked, but it's a major safety hazard. With prolonged use, the fork thickness gradually decreases. International safety standards stipulate that if fork thickness wear reaches 10% of its original value, its load-bearing capacity will drop by 20%. Therefore, it's recommended to regularly inspect forks with professional calipers. If the wear exceeds the threshold, replace the forks immediately to prevent accidents.

4. Expanded Applications

Sometimes, it's unavoidable to handle long or wide goods. In the absence of a side-mounted forklift, fork extensions are a low-cost optimization solution. They provide additional reach, easily handling goods of unusual sizes. During handling, ensure the goods don't deviate from the load center to prevent tipping.

Whether in the high temperatures of summer or the harsh conditions of winter, choosing durable forks and related accessories is crucial for the long-term, efficient use of equipment.
