How To Maintain Stability Safely During Operation Of A Telescopic Boom Crane?

Apr 02, 2026

When using a telescopic boom crane for material handling, many people ask: How heavy can this crane lift? However, the stability of the equipment is equally crucial.

  • Unlike traditional forklifts, telescopic boom cranes operate by extending their booms to move forward and upward. This causes a shift in the center of gravity. As the boom extends, the load moves away from the vehicle body, increasing the forward tilting torque and thus raising the risk of tipping over. This explains why the same crane can lift heavier loads when the boom is not fully extended, but only lighter loads when fully extended.
  • Modern telescopic boom cranes are increasingly equipped with torque limiters. This device monitors the load and boom position in real time, automatically calculating the safe operating range. If you overload or exceed the range, it will issue a warning and alarm, and may even restrict your next action. This effectively improves the safety of the equipment in complex working conditions and prevents tipping over.
  • Besides counterweights and electronic systems, the overall structure of the machine also affects its stability. A low center of gravity and a high-strength integrated frame structure allow the equipment to maintain good stability on uneven ground or in other working environments.
  • However, even if the equipment itself has a robust stabilization system, the way it is operated can still affect safety. We previously received a customer service case where they demanded compensation for equipment damage. However, after understanding the actual situation, we discovered that they had been overloading the equipment for an extended period to meet deadlines, leading to boom damage and breakage, and ultimately, equipment rollover. Based on this example, operators must be familiar with the equipment's performance before operation, strictly adhere to the torque limiter's warnings, avoid sudden rises, falls, and sharp turns, and ensure that every operation is performed safely and according to regulations to maintain the equipment's stability and reliability.

Safety is paramount, and stability is the prerequisite. Only by fully understanding the equipment's characteristics can it operate stably and efficiently under various working conditions, ensuring safety for construction projects and material handling.
