In daily warehousing and logistics operations, different types of goods have different requirements for handling methods.
For standardized goods such as palletized goods, cartons, and finished product packaging, a standard counterbalance forklift can usually complete the pick-up, transport, and placement in one go. The entire process is simple and efficient, and it is currently the most common handling method.
However, in industries such as steel, timber, aluminum profiles, and pipes, a different situation is often seen: the goods have already been picked up, but their direction and position still need to be repeatedly adjusted. Sometimes, they even need to be picked up again before transport or warehousing can be completed. This is not a problem of driving skills, but rather determined by the characteristics of the goods and the working environment.The key to this phenomenon is not the weight of the goods, but rather their length, shape, and the handling space required.
Taking long profiles as an example, when a standard forklift picks up the goods, they extend laterally to both sides of the forklift. This significantly increases the space occupied when entering warehouse aisles, approaching shelves, or turning. If the aisles are narrow or the goods are densely stacked, the driver often needs to adjust the vehicle's position multiple times to ensure the goods reach the designated location accurately.
Similar situations are common during loading and unloading. To ensure goods smoothly enter the transport vehicle, their orientation sometimes needs to be adjusted before proceeding to the next step. While the process can be completed smoothly, it adds operational steps and extends operation time.
This is why companies handling long-sized goods, when planning logistics solutions, not only focus on the rated load capacity of the equipment but also on the smoothness of the handling path and whether the vehicle can minimize mid-journey adjustments.
For these situations, side forklift trucks employ a different layout than ordinary forklifts. Goods are carried along the vehicle's side, remaining parallel to the vehicle throughout transport. The vehicle can travel directly along the aisle without frequently changing the direction of the goods. For the storage, retrieval, transport, and loading/unloading of long materials, this method reduces repetitive adjustments due to space constraints, making the entire handling process more seamless.
Of course, this does not mean that side forklift trucks can replace ordinary forklifts. For palletized goods, standard warehousing, and most conventional logistics scenarios, ordinary forklifts remain a highly efficient and versatile choice. The advantages of side-mounted forklifts are mainly evident in special working conditions such as handling long goods, narrow aisles, and high-density stacking.
Therefore, when selecting material handling equipment, instead of simply comparing which forklift is "more efficient," it's better to first analyze your cargo type and operating environment. Only when the equipment is matched to the working conditions can unnecessary handling steps be truly reduced, improving overall logistics efficiency.
